Speaking Dante, the 100 canti of the Divine Comedy read in English in a 24-hour marathon

On September 13 and 14, 25 internationally renowned actors will take turns in the virtual space of the Teatro della Compagnia

The 100 canti of Dante’s Divine Comedy will be read in English in a 24-hour marathon. ‘Speaking Dante’ will take place from 7pm on September 13 to 7pm on September 14 at the Cinema La Compagnia.

The canti will be recited by 25 actors chosen by the award-winning director and actor Justin Butcher, including Ralph Fiennes, a Shakespearean actor who has chosen to interpret Canto 34 of Hell, Helen Mirren, and Rupert Everett. The unique contributions will be filmed for J.Productions who are behind the initiative.

The cast who will be in attendance at the Teatro della Compagnia in Florence includes Janice Acquah, Eleanor Butcher, Justin Butcher, Mary Chater, Clara Francesca, Andrew Harrison, Rupert Mason, Jan Noble, Amaka Okafor and Kenneth Omole. Their will be video contributions from Adjoa Andoh (the face of Lady Danbury in the television series Bridgeton), Jessie Buckley, Janie Dee, Stephen Dillane (Tony Award winner who worked with Franco Zeffirelli and on the set of Game of Thrones), Kate Fleetwood, Janet Henfrey, Ian McDiarmid (remembered by Star Wars lovers for his role as Palpatine), Guy Masterson Mastroianni, Tim McInnery, John Nettles (known in Italy for the role of Inspector Barnaby), Dominic West and Brigid Zengeni.

The live streaming will be available on the Più Compagnia platform from 7pm on September 13 until 11pm on September 24. All proceeds and donations from the event will be donated to the Community of Sant’Egidio in Florence who are committed to taking care of migrants and refugees.
